Can I lose all my money?
Yes. Crypto-asset prices can fall sharply and quickly, and some assets have become worthless. Only use money you can afford to lose entirely.
What are the main risks?
- Volatility: prices can move by large amounts within hours.
- Platform failure: trading platforms and lenders can freeze withdrawals or become insolvent, and your assets may not be protected.
- Weak protections: in many countries crypto-assets fall outside deposit insurance and investor compensation schemes.
- Fraud and theft: scams, hacks and lost private keys are common and losses are rarely recovered.
- Leverage: borrowing magnifies losses as well as gains, and leveraged positions can be closed automatically at a loss.
- Complexity: some products, such as derivatives and lending schemes, are hard to understand and price.
